Theory and Practice of Relational Psychotherapy Integration

Theory and Practice of Relational Psychoanalytic Integration (Live, Online)

This course is taught on Mondays from 1:00 to 2:50 on September 11, 18, and October 2, 2023.

Each legitimate psychotherapy approach has its own genius and limitations. Knowledge of more than one approach and the ability to combine them skillfully enhances a practitioner’s clinical creativity and resourcefulness.

This course—which is a requirement of NIP’s Certificate Program in Psychotherapy Integration (PIP) but open to noncertificate students—introduces practitioners to ways of conceptualizing and combining interventions from other therapy approaches into ongoing relational psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

An integrative psychotherapy practice is significantly supported by familiarity with this discipline’s history, various theoretical frameworks, and most recent developments.

Readings include the contributions from Wilma Bucci, Louis Costanguay, Paul Wachtel, Jill Bresler and Karen Starr, Leslie Greenberg, Kenneth Frank (instructor), and others.

The following issues are considered:

  • A brief history of psychotherapy integration in psychoanalysis

  • An overview of different theoretical approaches for integrating

  • Emphasis on a relational psychoanalytic framework for integrative work

  • The role of research in common factors, cognitive science, and neuroscience

  • A new schema-based approach to integrative psychotherapy based on the blending of psychoanalytic principles with those from cognitive, affective, and neuroscience.

  • Practical guidelines, using case material

The course is taught on Mondays from 1:00 to 2:50, September 11, 18, October 2, 2023.

Learning Objectives

The learning objectives include:

I. Students will be able to describe the historical and theoretical evolution of psychotherapy integration.

II. Students will be able to describe a relational psychoanalytic model based on emotion schemas and how the model differs from other major frameworks for integration.

III. Using the schema-based psychoanalytic and other frameworks, students will learn to conceptualize strategies for introducing outside interventions into relational analytic therapy.

Kenneth Frank, a leading voice in psychoanalytic psychotherapy integration, has written and lectured extensively on this topic. Dr. Frank is a Co-Founder and Board Director at NIP and Co-Director of PIP, NIP’s Integrative Training Program. He is also a Former Clinical Professor in Psychiatry (part-time) at Columbia University. Dr. Frank treats individuals and couples, in person and remotely, for those in NY, NJ, FL, and elsewhere.
